So here I am making a scrapbook - I finally have some photos worthy (by that I mean, they weren't taken automatically) to get their ass-kicked in criticism! Ha-ha.

Did a short series of photographs using my cousin on the weekend to experiment with manual; but a lot of my photographs are either under-exposed/over-exposed, badly framed or just appear dull and lifeless.

I guess what contributes to the badly exposed stuff is lack of lighting knowledge and photography knowledge in general - i've been reading some stuff, but I still can't grasp the concept of what is properly lit? Or how to properly capture stuff in terms of right aperture & shutter speeds (+insert more technical jargon here) - any advice on articles/video's/good books?

(Hopefully besides the manual though, it's not in colour and I find it difficult to get through!)

But yeah, really i'm just looking for some constructive feedback on how to get the proper exposure, how to properly frame & how to not make the images look dull and lifeless!

Images have only been edited in terms of dark circles unless stated below.

^^ Didn't like this one at all so I made the background blurry too. And woops at not editing it properly in terms of eyes. Ha-ha. You can tell slightly on the LHS I didn't blend it properly.

Some tips for you newbies... (and oldies :p )


Don't post pictures that you're not satisfied with!
This isn't a dump.


Resize your pictures before posting them!
Max recommended width 1000 px
Max recommended height 800 px
Try to get the picture to fit a normal screen.
It's not cool to have to scroll to see the whole photo


Avoid Snapshots!
Keep this an Art Forum


Handle critics
The goal on this board is to help each other improve.
Don't hesitate to give a user comments on how he can improve his photos.
Try not to defend yourself when you get critics, they are not personal attacks. :)


All threads with Nudity or Violence must include NSFW or something similar in the title.
NSFW= Not Safe For Work

Aiming to for something dynamic, that really stands out, and gives a lot depth, so it almost feels as though the model is jumping out at you... if that makes any sense...
